The Cyclist Federation's spring campaign "We Cycle to Work" has been getting thousands of colleagues on their bikes since 1997. This collective activity spreads cycling joy and friendship in workplaces across Denmark. Participants join teams of 2-16 colleagues, aiming to cycle as many days as possible in May.

The benefits are significant when it comes to sustainability, as the many kilometres cycled not only promote well-being among colleagues but also improve health and help protect the environment and the planet.

Let’s take a look at the three advantages—and consider whether you should cycle to work too. Not just in May, but maybe the rest of the year?

Well-being at the Workplace

Community flourishes when people do something together. A shared project gives colleagues something to talk about across the organization. "We Cycle to Work" can help include colleagues who might be new or don’t usually engage with others at the workplace. The cycling trip releases endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine, which help reduce stress and improve mood. It’s an opportunity to dial down the stress levels, both for the individual and the team.

Good for Public Health

Cycling strengthens health by preventing cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, depression, and dementia. Air quality improves when you cycle instead of taking the car, older cars especially emit harmful pollutants and particles that increase the risk of respiratory and heart diseases. Exercise strengthens the heart, improves fitness, and promotes mental well-being. Regular physical activity reduces the risk of several diseases and enhances overall quality of life.

Benefits for the Environment and the Planet

By choosing the bike over the car, you significantly reduce your CO2 emissions. This makes cycling a sustainable form of transportation that makes a real difference in the CO2 balance. Cyclists contribute to a more resource-efficient economy by wearing out bikes instead of cars. Bicycles require fewer resources to produce and maintain compared to cars, which means less waste and lower consumption of materials like metal and plastic. Your cycling trips reduce traffic congestion, benefiting traffic flow and reducing the number of accidents. This creates space for more sustainable cities and communities, as bicycles don’t take up much room. When cars aren’t dominating the roads, space can be freed up in cities for green areas and recreational facilities.

In short:

Cycling to work is not only a personal benefit but also an active contribution to a more sustainable future. Every cycling trip counts, and together we can create a healthier and more sustainable world.
