Resource consciousness and common sense have always been part of the DNA at HV-transport. Therefore, the green transition is an achievable goal. And the effort is paying off—though it comes with work and costs, as the wheels now turn in new ways.

In 2021, HV-transport was awarded the Green Transport Prize. Biogas trucks and a fleet filled with the latest trucks on the market are some of the company’s green initiatives.

A biogas truck costs about 200,000 DKK more than a diesel truck, and green biogas fuel is taxed 25% higher than diesel. However, the annual savings are up to 306 tons of CO2 per truck. But it's not just about the environmental impact—the well-being of the drivers also benefits from these green initiatives. HV-transport receives more applications than before, which is crucial in an industry where recruitment is a challenge.

An app, combined with training in energy-efficient driving, helps the drivers drive in a more CO2-friendly way. For example, by letting the truck roll and using lower speeds to reduce braking.

"Our drivers have been incredibly positive throughout the entire process. Better driving reduces stress in daily life. They can see on the app how their adjusted driving saves fuel, and thereby CO2 and money," says Simon Haubjerg Jørgensen, commercial director and co-owner of HV-transport and Sandshoppen.dk.

He has learned that with green transition, it's about changing attitudes and habits.

"The green initiative is a permanent part of our board, management, and driver meetings. We talk about the results and share experiences across the company. At the next driver meeting, we’ll go over the latest results, and all employees and their partners are invited to a World Cup handball game as a thank you for their collective efforts."

However, it has been a process to work in a new way. In the beginning, drivers were concerned about being monitored and looked over.

"Today, they know that we only evaluate general measurements and look at things that stand out. The initiative is a shared responsibility and has become a bit like a fun video game," says Simon Haubjerg Jørgensen, emphasizing that all new things are difficult at first.

"That’s why it’s important that we, as an industry, support each other. An organization like Bæredygtig Herning can help us find future solutions. As an industry, we are not throwing in the towel. On the contrary, we are ready to roll up our sleeves and contribute purposefully to the green transition."
